Default Book for Yachtmaster

Hello,
I am looking for a good book containing everything needed for RYA Yachtmaster. A kind of compendium to which I could refer any time I would feel like in need to both revise and build up my knowledge.

I have seen the following two which seem interesting:
-The Sailing Bible by Barrie Smith
-Complete Yachtmaster by Tom Cunliffe
Any opinions?

All the recommendations highly appreciated!

Best regards,
Theriel

I have not used any of these books personaly, but I know 'Yacht Master' by Pat Langley-Price and Philip Ouvry is a best seller. The YHA Yachtmaster book is also very popular. It is not so in depth but a very handy reference book.
You can get both books second hand HERE

Can personally recommend Langley-Price/Ouvry - not met the others. Used this on the train (chart work a bit of a problem !!!) and then used if for revision before taking the YM exam. Really was good. Had exercises and answers for each chapter - fun and useful.

Only think missing IMHO is a bit more about weather and when I did the YM shore course the instructor recommended a slim paperback which was, I think (since it's on the boat and sadly I'm not) called Weather at Sea. But then meteorology is NOT my strong point !

Good luck - it is GREAT fun !

Before doing the shorebased course I purchased a number of titles I'd be happy to recommend.

1. Cunliffe's excellent "The Complete Yachtmaster" covers all the basics in a cursory manner.

2. RYA's "Navigation handbook" (way better than Manley's Practical Navigation and than the various titles I tried from the library) added quite a lot more on that front.

3. RYA's "Weather handbook" added stacks.... but I'd consider it a bare minimum on that side of things. Our tutor had an impressive collection of titles (literally dozens) that would have allowed you to get further into the subject.

4. Campbell's outstanding "A Yachtsman's Complete Guide to the Collision Rules": knocks spots off all the other guides I found by showing how all the various bits tie together.

I also got the RYA book on the European Waterways regulations and the RYA VHF Handbook... and Admiralty Chart 5011 for all the symbols and abbreviations... but found quite a few other books at the library without which further bookstore visits might have been necessary.
