A Ha. You're idea has worked. I used rather larger 32mm connector than you suggested and found that TV aerial mast tube was the right wall thickness for a sleeve. It was so perfect that I had to drive it onto the oar with a rubber mallet and remove the "O" rings from the connector to get it in.
