Default Wow! What a lot!

There seem to be far more threads per diem, now that each new post on an existing thread brings that thread to the head of the queue

Yes - but it also means that threads that should have been quietly left to die just keep on going and going....

A certain "meet" thread would be a good example.

MODS - please, please set the default mode as "show threads in original post order"!!

Change it if you don't like it. There are loads of user options available. Go to 'User CP' and you can set almost whatever you like. It's in 'Settings and Options > Edit Options > Thread Display Options'.

Default Posts display

Re Vyv Cox suggestion - I dont think it works - you can change many of the display modes but the thing that causes the problem is that whatever settings you go for it is affected by when something is posted OR updated. It's the updated bit that is problematic and we need the moderators to disable if possible as I agree with the other posters that it is a pain to see old threads dragged to the top

Good one, thanks for that. I knew it must be there somewhere.

Don't quite see that. Surely it's better to see what is actively being discussed. Otherwise a popular and active debate on a thread would get burried under loads of Billy-No-Mates threads with no responses.

I agree with LS, if something new is added to an old thread it should come to the top. Otherwise most would never see it.

No it isn't.

It's at the bottom left hand corner of the thread list, and it needs to be reset every time you visit, or change pages, or reply to a post, or click 'forum jump', or..., or... It's simply not usable.

I was keeping out of this because I've had my say on the subject several times, but(!):

Another plea to get this sorted out.

As for: "if something new is added to an old thread it should come to the top. Otherwise most would never see it." - If I'm interested in a thread, I'll go back and look at it, If I'm not, then I don't want to see it popping up again; And: "Surely it's better to see what is actively being discussed"... Not for me it isn't if I know it's something I'm not interested in, or where the 'discussion' is the same few participants engaging in what should be a private pedantry contest, the like of which would never happen if they were in the same room as each other and more than 3 years old.

(No offence intended to the posters of the above remarks - they're just handy examples of the arguments for the 'last post' brigade )

FWIW, I also think that the 'constant scum of bubbling vitriol' that sits at the top of the forums these days aggravates the normal seasonal grumpiness.

/rant

I'm not trying to argue that one way of sorting is better than any other - it is a personal preference but please (IPC) give us the choice we had with the old forum.

/rant again

Oh, and another thing... (this is the £1 rant, not the 50p one)

The sort order gets really annoying when you get a poster popping out like a cuckoo out of a clock every time a new topic appears and adding a facile and valueless reply. Is there a prize for the number of 1st replies, or something?

/rant again again

And breathe....

Andy

Agree Misterg.
Right bummer to see the same dodgy stuff floating to the top. Worst thing about the new set up in my view.
PS
Poll, we need a poll.

Good idea - I find the present setup annoying, previously I would go back to an earlier thread if it interested me - I didn't find it a hassle.

OK, there are two schools of thought with this, some like it that the post stay in chronological order, others like it that the active post stay at the top.

There has to be a default setting, and with it, one group aren't going to be happy, but we can't help that, if we change it, the people that want the most active threads at the top will start a similar thread to this one in the future.

We are however looking at ways so that everyone can choose their own setting and it will stay that way.

I can't believe people don't like this 'new' way... it makes total sense, as the vaaast majority of forums on the internet also believe. The old version was ridiculous - having to trawl through pages to check if your post in a particular thread had been replied to.

The default on the 'old' version was the same as this

One needed to alter the default setting to get the posts in chronological order, but one had the facility to do so. Most (all?) of the other forums I read allow the same facility. In the end, it's a personal preference, and I do prefer the last post first for low traffic forums, but this isn't one of them (yet... )

I don't see the point in a poll (there has been at least one in the past). I think people are pretty evenly divided on the matter, so a sizeable proportion of people will be p****d off either way.

Incidentally, if you just want to know when/if your post has had a reply, you can set email notifications, etc. in both old & new set-ups.

Or just look in UserCP where you will automatically be subscribed to any threads that you have posted to.

That only works if you have posted. If you are just following a thread it doesn't work.
The attempt to make the choice a user-selected permanent setting is the route to go.
