Thanks to you all for all that. So it seems my options are:

. to run a wire up the shroud (keeping it neat and well protected) or

.to route a groove (keeping the rain out, and covering it with timber for a neater look)

and that both are tried and true methods.

There are a few other reasons that I should pull the mast out and do some work on it, so it might soon be time to bite the bullet. In the mean time I keep thinking about hoisting a battery powered light, but I can't see a simple way of ensuring it stays facing forward.
