See The Times article: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle6962134.ece

Good thinking. Running a marina would enable them simultaneously to move into legality but stay in the priracy business. Maybe that's what they had in mind when they grabbed a couple of chandlers?

I would have thought that a few of the forums more solvent Solent sailors could have a whip round and treat the rest of the South Coast Branch to a nice Christmas present.
Then run it as a charitable (Thus getting any available tax benefits)co-operative, possibly along the lines of preserved railways with a small permanent staff and a pool of volunteers..., maybe rename it "Good Value Marina".

Default Bembridge Harbour - Value for Money

Although a price has yet to be formally announced, "in the region of £3m" is mentioned in the Times article (Sat 19th Dec); anyone who knows the harbour and its history will tell you that this is far too high. No one sensible would consider even paying half that price.

That would be a lottery dream wouldn't it?

"The sheltered harbour at the mouth of the River Yar left public ownership at the end of the 1960s having previously been in the hands of British Rail."

I see that it is the Eastern Yar. Does this actually connect up with Western Yar at Yarmouth? Nothing much more than a ditch for miles, I would guess.

No, no ditch they are connected at the "wide ends" by about 20 miles of good sailing water though.

Not happy? If it was my harbour I'd just kickem out!

Seriously though folks, how about the new owner putting a cill or a lock in and making it permanent deep water?

Looks to me as though it will end up like Keyhaven. There seem to be too many restrictions on the activities of the owner to make it a viable concern so you will not see a properly funded company like D & R or MDL taking over.

It is a shame as it seems that "Good intentions" will kill this harbour, but no doubt the RSPB would like nothing better than to see the whole place silted up.
