Has Yachting World reduced its editorial content and quality?
Hi, having been a reader of YW for 20+ years now and a subscription user, every time the new copy arrives, i start to think, would I bother going to the news agents to buy this? apart from the Golding and thompson interview this month nothing else had much interest, or seemed like advertorial, Am I being fair? does anyone agree?

Sorry I did not think to allow people to view without voting, I will post the results on Monday and again Next Friday, but Then I am off on Hols, so when the pole finishes on the 31st perhaps someone else could publish them

Mind you, some of the yachts, like Maltese Falcon are out of this world. I like reading about such things.
Like the guy who was spending $10000 (or was it £'s) per day on sails in the racing season.
What sort of guy can do that? And where would such a person hang out, to be met, so to speak? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]
Only thing is their yachts are so big, they can really only stay anchored miles off shore. Maltese Falcon is having a centre board fitted to increase the draft to 31 metres!! Admittedly removable by the crew, but seemingly she will point better. Owner keeps looking for strong winds to achieve designed speed of 25 knots. Only got up to 21 knots so far.
That takes the biscuit IMHO.
Still, where else would you find such gems of essential information?
Mainly I read YM. Just like the occasional daydream [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]
The main reason I read it is to follow the ARC. We have friends in this year's rally.

I very occasionally buy it to see how the other half lives, but I can see how a regular diet of it would become boring. I stopped buying Golf magazines because they were more to do with products and services than they were about Golf.
As someone who is still relatively new to cruising, such as PBO still has enough to interest me even after a couple of seasons, but I can well understand the initial argument.

And not just Yachting World.
Basic problem is there's no real competition in the mag market, it's all virtually under the same umbrella, so we get their least effort. And boy it shows - I reckon the boat reviews are just rehashes of old write-ups (too easy with computers, isn't it?) And cover prices are well on their way to £4 - incroyable, mon Vieux.
The current Xmas offerings are a disgrace - diaphanous is the word that springs to mind!
I cannot understand folks who take annual subs - (but hey, most of us have done it in the past and chucked the habit!) It costs a lot less to just waddle over to the newsagents and look the mags over each month then buy the best article on anchors (what again?) or 70m trophy boats, if that's your taste...But if you're honest with yourself you know you've got them already under the sofa at home - in last year's edition!
But at least we've got a good web site to entertain ourselves on...? The medium is the massage, and the medium it is a changin'

Out of interest i have sent the following to the editor of YW, I wonder will I get a reply?

if you like what we do please tell your friends,
and if you don’t like what we do, then please tell us.
You may wish to read my post on the YM forum, as it says, basically I feel that your magazine is nolonger good value for money and it is now becoming even more populated with Advertorials, and judging buy the pole and the comments on the forum, other readers agree.
Out of interest, I also read Sailing World, an American magazine, which is great, and I also read Yachts and Yachting (Y&Y) which was a couple of years ago going to the dogs, then up popped Sail Racer, all of a sudden Y&Y improved and now it is a reasonable quality read again, competition works wonders. (Unfortunately Sail Racer went bust, but not before waking up the staff of Y&Y)
It’s unlikely that YW will have any competition, so for me it’s just remembering or knowing how to cancel the direct debit, unless YW starts to improve.
So please accept the fact that I have told you, now the choice is yours

Nothing beats the editor's Brittany Cruise article a few months back. It was inaccurate and pathetically short of any useful facts. It even seemed to take pride in showing they totally missed a main channel turning and nearly hit a rock in spite of using a GPS plotter. Anyone on a long weekend cruise form the CI could have produced something infinitely better.
As a relative new-comer to all of this PBO has been a real education and it appears to have soething in it for everyone. I've already stopped getting YW!
