Following the debate regarding the Royal Yachting Association on Scuttlebutt over the Christmas period the RYA's chief excutive, Rod Carr, has volunteered to appear on a ybw.com forum to answer questions.

In the first of what might turn out to be an occasional series of interviews with key boating people, we have set this pilot to run from 1600-1800GMT Tuesday 14 January. The session will be held in Eastleigh and it will be moderated by Kim Hollamby, not for any censorship reason but in order to keep some shape and clarity to proceedings.

Moderated posts do not appear until we press the go button. This is unlike all of the usual forums here and there will be a delay between you posting them and live publication. Similarly in different fashion to the norm on the ybw.com forums we might edit some of the questions and comments strictly for the purposes of brevity and, if sadly necessary, to remove any sentences that seem unnecessarily abusive. Criticisms will not be sanitised.

Questions can already be posted here. Please submit them as new threads on this forum and they will be kept on the database ready for answers on 14 January.

If you have any questions or comments please reply to this post.

Default Can the RYA ..

give us details of the percentage of the population it thinks it represents and the percentage of the population who go boating/sailing or other wise use the UK waters.

The answer will show how effectively they are seen to be useful representatives.

Default Question

I have conducted a straw pole of cruising sailors over the last few months and it is hard to find any that are impressed with the RYA's service to them. Adding their negative views to the comments of members of this forum and others my question is.

How does Mr Carr explain the antipathy of so many cruising yachtsmen to the RYA?

Default That sounds good

I hope that you will publish the entire transcript in all of IPC's boating magazines. Rod Carr's a brave man ... and here's a cheer to you for setting it up.

Can we have the next 'live' interactive perhaps with the RNLI? then the UKHO? and then the MCA? ...

My pre-question to Rod Carr is that the RYA is totally out of touch with Joe Punter and that this is well demonstrated by their useless magazine. Rider: The RYA booklets are nulli secundus. Why can't they apply the quality of their booklets to both the magazine and the membership in general?

Hi Kim:

I wrote a lengthy question and clicked on the post as oppose to the post reply and it has disappeared into the ether.

I do not plan on spending another half an hour writing it all out again but it may be worth you making it clear to click on the post reply button as oppose to the post button.

Good luck

Richard

Your question received fine....currently a bit daunted by the response but I promise we'll work through as many of them as we can this afternoon.

Rod...

The RYA representation of its members is purported to be through the board members, elected to represent different parts and sections of the RYA structure. This system is open to favouritism and old-boy clubbishness.

As a personal member, I pay a subscription disproportionate to that of the member who is only affiliated through his club.

It is possible that the RYA would be more apparently representative of its members interests, if there were a one man-one vote election of representatives - in a similar way to our parliamentary system. This system is echoed in the election of officers of the professional institutions of which I am/was a member.

My perception, shared by many, is that I have no voice - no real way to be heard - as the system is set up now.

You cannot see the questions because this is a moderated forum and nothing has been rolled in yet. We'll start working through them in around 20 minutes time.
