RYA question timeHere is the result of a Q and A session with the RYA's chief executive Rod Carr on 1600-1800 GMT Tuesday 14 January. This is a moderated forum and any posts made here will not appear at the time of posting.
I'll be back on later this evening to review what we managed to cover. Meantime any comments about the success or otherwise on this please post as a reply to this thread.
I agree, well done and thanks to Kim and the RYA.
However, I felt RYA came out of it poorly, there was a lack of real debate, too many prepared answers.
I have posted some more on the main forum.
All good stuff, do it again RYA - but the underlying response seemed more negative than positive - don't dishearten if it was - was that 'balanced down to seem more real', or did you feel there would be/was more criticism than open information requests.
The first one will always get the emotion dump until objectivity sets in after a few opportunities to 'type' directly and join in.
Go for longer next time -all afternoon so people can hop in and out between their work.
Did the audience look familiar, recognise a few? - what proportion of participants/readers do you think were none-marine industry.

Re: Closed for business
Worthwhile - certainly.
Satisfactory - maybe not.
I'm surpised how often Rod had to say "we've just" or we are now" in his rsponses - it seems as if the sorts of things we all see as being wrong with RYA have only just occured to those in Eastleigh's Ivory Tower.

Well done Kim. Very interesting. Please keep it up and do it again some time. Maybe with a group of marina managers. Life boat lot and maybe Coast Guards. Still cant think RYA has any relevance to me. But there you go.

I wish I'd been here for the action. Just started looking at the 'transcripts' here, so can't comment on the quality of the responses. I do however this was a worthwhie exercise and one to be repeated.
I saw that my question on Solas was aired, and it would have been nice to question further, so a heart felt plea that future events are evening based when people are home from work.
I suspect that 2 hours is not enough to make the most of the these events, even with prepared responses (I've nothing against these as starters) but repeated question and answer is how to make these things fly..with moderator to keep things online and under control
Read through it all now, and still think it was worthwhile
Would love to know how many people were there 'live' and how many read after the event (doesn't have to be numbers, a percentage would be good).
Probably worth advertising the link for people to look at, as most will have forgotten it had occurred without prompting
If we keep posting, will RYA respond to messages?
Are the RYA going to have participate in the forums actively from know on, MDL and MCGA (I know he's not officially representing that body, but does a good job) have set a good precedent here
Q Would love to know how many people were there 'live' and how many read after the event (doesn't have to be numbers, a percentage would be good). A It probably broke out two-thirds questions posted pre event and one third during the two hours but there are others left yet to deal with and ones that duplicated questions that were featured. Also all follow-on comments were of course posted during the event.
Q Probably worth advertising the link for people to look at, as most will have forgotten it had occurred without prompting. A Agreed - it's in the plan to sort that in the morning.
Q If we keep posting, will RYA respond to messages? A There's no formal system in place for that at present. We have agreed to discuss follow-on in a week when I am in Eastleigh again.
Q Are the RYA going to have participate in the forums actively from now on, MDL and MCGA (I know he's not officially representing that body, but does a good job) have set a good precedent here A I too value the input from MDL and others. Staff from the RYA are welcome to participate and I will do my best to ensure that their input is respected, as is the case with all users, if they do decide to post.
Interesting .... I wonder what Rod Carr took away from this, and what actions (if any) will arise from that.
The session had a lot of breadth, but, owing to the time constraint, little depth. As a result a lot of the responses felt like PR speak. An excellent ice-breaker, but maybe the follow-up should be rather more open-ended, to permit discussion to take place, and opinions (on both sides) to be modified. It would also be helpful if other RYA personnel were involved, as relevent.
I get the impression that Kim was very much the driving force behind this exercise. If that is the case, I feel he deserves a big vote of thanks.
BTW, I note that the moderation took place at the RYAs ivory tower - and that Kim had to smarten up for the occasion - gone was the scruffy jeans & scuffed deck shoes "old hack", and in his place the smart collar & tie "ybw.com group editor". A worrying development. <g>
You obviously ran out of time as my question that I posted ahead of the live session did not get included. Out of interest, what proportion of the questions posted did not get posted?
Your last para spooky. I was wearing a collar and tie (and blazer) when I arrived (pretty rare on ybw watch) as, thanks to busy diary, had been at the Royal Institution of Naval Architects in London immediately before and thought that correct form for Upper Belgrave Street. Walk into Eastleigh HQ and immediately find myself faced by a chief exec and his team with no tie between them. Didn't take me long to revert to form.
As for the change from 'old hack'...simply got fed up answering Qs about my cough. Plus having moved back to a title with editor in it realised that I was back in the thick of it again after a heady few months in the straospheric realms of publishing
Ran out of time - yes. Sorry for not getting to yours. Also got caught a bit on the hop because, stupidly, I missed the fact that we had so much coming in some of the earlier threads had got pushed to page 2. My fault entirely.
I'll see if there's anything we can do about that...
Thanks, Kim for organizinging it. And thanks to Rod Carr for being at the sharp end. Though time was short and the number of questions limited, I felt that the RYA came out well enough such that I may consider re-joining them again. I still feel that the RYA is aloof from ordinary members and based on this mini-forum does not blast its trumpet enough publicly - and in its Magazine.
I hope that extracts of this mini-forum will be published in all the IPC boating magazine.
