I’m trying to find out what the availability and real world costs of moorings for a 24’ boat would be on or very close to the river Orwell (possibly the Stour as well.) Ideally the closer to Ipswich the better. I have had some quotes for Pontoon berths from Neptune marina and Woolverstone marina and once I’d recovered (actually the Neptune quote wasn’t bad 1466.40 for the year inc vat) I thought I’d try and find out the costs would be for a swinging mooring –in their many variations. Any local knowledge or guides to what I’d be expected to pay much appreciated. But please only information regarding this specific area would be relevant.

Investigate Wrabness on the Stour. Strange and quite sweet little place. Fabulous sunsets. Distant strains of brass band music on occasions from Holbrook School.
And horribly exposed when the wind is in the east and not much better when the west wind doth blow.
There are far more moorings and much better shelter on the Orwell. Try
Suffolk Yacht Harbour who have moorings at Levington
Woolverstone marina who have moorings at Woolverstone
Kings or the other yard who's name I can't remember at Pin Mill
Pin Mill Sailing, Royal Harwich, Stoke Sailing or Orwell Yacht Clubs
ABP at Ipswich who control private mooring sites on the river.
If you don't mind drying out, there are moorings on the Stour between Mistley and Manningtree - try Mistley Sailing Club.
it does not, thought you were looking for a marina near to you, you find that marinas dont tend to be at the bottom of the high street or down your road .lol
Ring Tony Ward at Pin Mill. Sorry I have'nt got his number, as it's on board, but it's in "East Coast Rivers". This is the right time of year to contact him and book one. Don't know what he charges now but a figure of Pds 450 from ten years ago is lodged in my memory - that was for a deep water mooring for a 37 foot boat. You will also need to arrange about a dinghy space and, given the internimable length of Pin Mill Hard, invest in a good trolley!
If a drying mooring is acceptable, I've been told that the Orwell Yacht Club are the people to talk to (about joining, as they are Club moorings). The most convenient for Ipswich and by all accounts a good Club.

I can fully sympathise with you about the cost as I faced this problem 4 years ago.
In the end I needed to get afloat quickly and decided to use a swinging mooring at Woolverstone - pricey I know. The plan was to use it for a year and sort things out for the future later.
Four years on I am still there and while I cringe at the cost the arrangement suits my needs and you get what you pay for.
There is a water taxi service included in the mooring fee. I am usually accompanied by family, grand children and friends and with all the comings and goings and barrow loads of kit and vitals this sevice is a godsend. Equally, use of the laundry and toilet/shower facilities is a bonus. Furthermore, the staff have been excellent in looking after us.
What does it cost to moor at Wolverstone? I have a Macwester 30 so being 6ft shorter I should be a bit cheaper than you. Do you moor all year round or do you lift out at Wolverstone? I moored on the Deben last year and did get some comments made about lack of showers etc. so I am considering my options. Paul
I'd echo everything positive that has been said about Woolverstone Marina. We are paying around £1800 annually for our 27-footer on a mooring in the river there, actually almost as near to Pin Mill as to Woolverstone. We get the free water taxi, first-class showers, etc, shoreside winter storage and lift in/out and scrub included in that figure. And the staff are unfailingly cheerful, polite, helpful and prepared to go the extra mile. Out in the river you get a bit of rock 'n' roll when the big freighters go by, but otherwise it's a first class location just an 1 hour 15 from Harwich harbour and the sea. 15 minutes by road from the A14/A12 junction at Ipswich, and half that to Fox's, the best chandlery on the east coast.
Am I alone in thinking that £1800 is rather a lot of money for 6 months on a swinging mooring up the Orwell? For just a little more, couldn't you have the convenience of 12 months afloat in a marina, with electricity etc, and perhaps even closer to the sea?
