Those little red numbers

OK, I've sussed those little red numbers indicate new postings but new since when? New since I last logged on to the MBY website? New since I last logged on to that particular Forum? Or simply unread postings? If the latter, how long do the postings continue to be marked as unread? And why does it sometimes take a while after you've logged on for the red numbers to appear?
Reason I ask is that sometimes I think I'm reading old postings that I have'nt read before but are not marked unread. Perhaps I'm just getting senile
