Viewing in Flat instead of Threaded: Reply to favouite topic.

When I get a 'Reply to Post' or 'Reply to a favourite topic' email, I often click the link to get directly back to the post. If I then want to review the rest of the thread I am then presented with it in 'threaded' mode rather than flat which is my usual default mode and which I prefer. Is there some way of changing this or even switching back manualy to flat??
