Well David, I was single handed at the time (Normally use two) but.. had to hold on to the rail for the wash... I am sure you well endowed yachtsmen would understand.. so, despite colregs. I was not keeping a good lookout on either the wash or the flow. Sometimes, one cannot fulfil the absurd requirements of the regulations. and.. with only one hand, it tends to droop and go where it wants..
Perhaps a flag of some sort could be divised..... ?? similar to a fortes hotel door sign ??.. do not disturb. ??.. delicate handling - with only one hand - in use ??
Perhaps , If one thinks logically, the problem could be solved by the female member of the crew lending a hand or two ???

I knew a guy in Canada who dated a fine gal.. her father berated him (them) for pissing in the snow.. wasnt really an issue .. but It WAS her handwriting... food for thought...
