Sorry that you persist in saying that the Volvo seal does not do the job as described when the design and evidence suggests that it does. If we are going down the route of saying what is safe and not safe, I would not put a face seal on my boat as I am not convinced that they are foolproof although as I have said there are many happy users. My prejudice is based on what I have seen with Deep Sea seals. I recognise that the PSS overcomes the major shortcoming, but I prefer a radial seal on the shaft where wear and leakage is likely to be gradual rather than catostrophic!
If you think logically and the external diameter of the tube is concentric with the internal (not always a given!), then the Volvo seal and a conventional stuffing box automatically centres the shaft in the tube, doing away with all this nonsense about spring balances which by your definition are a bodge to overcome what is to my mind a fundamental weakness of stern tubes that do not have an inboard bearing and rely on the stuffing box to hold the shaft central when aligning the engine. The flexible hose sometimes used is much stiffer than than the bellows used in a face seal which is why the arrangement works in practice.
