Quote: (cut) 3 Years ago watched a mobo turf into Mermaids a bit quickish. Henceforth severing his outdrive on a sticky up bit! Poking about the place at low water, I,m convinced there are one or two sticky up bits there, that aren't on the Chart!!
Sunday a mobo was aground at Lavan Sands. Monday a yacht was high and dry going into Conwy. Busy time for Conwy and Beaumaris ILB's.
There are at least 3 unmarked rocks. The one Freestyle has marked plus 2 more in the north. One of which blocks the passage between the little Island & the shore. They're all marked on my charts (now!) They are usually visible by the time they are a threat as the water is generally pretty clear (at least to 6' or so). I have been one of 2 yachts anchored in Mermaids cove, but I had to dry out for an hour or two to clear the other boat & the various rocks.
As to the lifeboat call out for a stranding on Lavan sands - it's a lovely picnic spot so I don't understand why the wives & kids needed to be airlifted off. Or why a Mayday was sent.
There was another Mayday over the weekend for a fouled prop for Chrissakes! The HMCG girl was very polite, "Do you have an anchor? Could you deploy it to hold your position? Is there any actual risk to life?" Bless her, she had more seamanship skills than the distressed skipper will ever have!
