Yachting and Boating World forums: OK GAWD, THEY'RE DREDGING PEEL HARBOUR WITH A BUCKET

They’re dredging Pell harbour with a bucket.

Yes it’s true. But to get back to the beginning. Some 4 years ago they started installing the flap gate. This of course means that the harbour never dries out as it used to in bygone years. This of course is a bonus for those boats that do not take kindly to being dumped on a hard bottom, but is still tidal with traffic lights as well.
Last year they did the test drillings for the pontoon posts. Well that was a step in the right direction. So now they are filling in a part of the top end of the harbour to make a boar park. Ok too. But now they need to dredge the harbour itself. And here’s how they are doing it. With a bucket.

I stood and watched how deep it went, about aa bucket depth and a bit,,, say 6 ft then wham into the solid something, rattle rattle and up it came gushing water a dumped a bit into the hold.
As you can see the boat is held in position by hawsers stretched across the harbour.
There were two, and they were moored side by side, but on this day one was moored up at the quayside. A problem perhaps. Not unlikely judging by appearaces.

Now I have had a thought, surely they knew they were going to have to dredge a some point, it must have been in the plans. So why on earth didn’t they do it first before the flapgate fiasco. It would have been so easy to have had a couple of good heavy bulldozers waiting at the top end of the harbour on the ramp which was already there and when the tide went out……. Wham bham and out it goes. Job done instead of this one bucket at a time which will take ages to complete. S’pecially with one up against the wall.
However it was a glorious day, so I am including all these other pics, and even to put a bit of a smile on some Raggies faces. Now aren’t I nice.

And here's all that is left of the old Manx Steam Railway link to Peel, though the Douglas to Port Erin section is stil going strong. and it runs almsot outside my house, i canset my time by the schedule. Yes they run to the minute.
