It is used for ship/yacht tracking. First full screen example I found just now was www.emissionshaus.com/kc/english/purplefinder/index.xml and click on 'Karte anzeigen'. or even the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club use it to track races... http://www.rhkyc.org.hk/hkvietnamrace/purplefinder.htm Once open you can view the whole world map, define a rectangle with the mouse to zoom in to minute detail for anywhere in the world, add isobars (they get more detailed the more you zoom in), add wave height etc. or even look at the isobar map with 10 days of prediction.
