Problem solved, chaps, it was the shear pin! I'm rather ashamed that I never thought to check it first but I've never had one go before and the failure occured when my tender was in deep water tied to my cruiser on a swinging mooring i.e. no impact of the prop. with anything as far as I know. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions ... all very educational.
