Sailing doesn't have to be expensive. For instance, some clubs which run their own boats might charge not much more than £30/day (food extra) to crew members. Most owners are desperate for crew. If you crew on such a boat, you may be expected to pay for skipper's food and drink in the pub. If the skipper expects you to pay for boat upkeep, find another skipper. I have a sailing dinghy, which I have owned for 25 years and spent very little money on, and which has covered thousands of mile around South Coast harbours. On the other hand .... marinas a full of boats which are costing a fortune, and which are used for a few weekends each year - if that ... owners in denial about costs, but typically about £100/mile I would guess ...
I have absolutely no experience on earning money from sailing, but am given to understand that the money/work ratio is not impressive.
