The Irish Sea
Tidal notes
Spring streams are strong off Milford Haven and the SW tip of Wales,
up to three knots near Turbot Bank, Skokholm and The Smalls. In St
George's Channel, especially in the narrowest stretches between
Ireland and St David's Head or the Lleyn Peninsula, spring rates can
touch three knots, when a weather-going tide kicks up a nasty sea.
Motor boats should cross at neaps if possible. Close off the east
Irish coast, spring streams can be strong towards the south end near
the offshore banks, touching four knots between Rosslare and Wicklow.
A fair stream is an advantage, even for fast motor boats, but avoid
fresh wind-over-tide conditions.
Further north off the Irish
coast, streams are more moderate about 2-212 knots at
springs near the Kish Bank but falling away to barely a knot
between Howth and Strangford Lough. Rates increase in the North
Channel, touching 2-212 knots between Galloway and Belfast
Lough. Springs and wind-over-tide conditions should be avoided here.
However, the streams ease off as you cross over towards the Firth
of Clyde.
