On a day when racing was close to being cancelled because of fickle wind conditions, the Chernikeeff British Team scored a 1st and 4th in the hotly contested Mercantile Credit Warsash Spring Series.

The Barlo Plastics sponsored Mumm 36, steered by Tim Powell won by one minute on corrected time with the Chernikeeff Team 50′ training boat Russe Noire, skippered by Team Captain Harold Cudmore taking line honours and finishing fourth on corrected time.

With over 250 boats on the regatta series and over twenty boats in Class 1, the premier class, this result is a good indicator of the strength of the British Team competing for the 1999 Champagne Mumm Admiral’s Cup in July.

With no wind at the 10.00 start time, racing was postponed until a fickle sea breeze filled in from the South. Both Barlo Plastics Mumm 36 and Chernikeeff 50′ started to the right of the fleet and benefited from a right-hand wind shift. The wind eventually filled in to 12 knots with Chernikeeff stretching her legs to take line honours on a mainly reaching course that was shortened to keep inside the time limit.
