Three people were rescued yesterday after their yacht lost her mast in poor conditions

The Plymouth RNLI lifeboat rescued three people yesterday after their 10.6 metre boat was dismasted.

The crew had been stuck at sea three miles south of the Eddystone lighthouse when the rescue boat arrived to assist them. They found that the yacht was strewn with broken rigging and downed lines, immobile and struggling in the heavy seas.

Two lifeboat crew climbed onboard and cleared the deck, fastening the dangerous broken rigging and spars, before towing the boat back to Mayflower Marina after five-and-a-half hours at sea.

No one was injured during the incident.
