A four-day/three-night Portsmouth area tour taking in the Royal Navy’s International Fleet Review including two mini-cruises to France with Brittany Ferries and P&O Ferries Sun 26 – Wed 29 June 2005
Tuesday 28 June is International Fleet Review Day, marking the start of Trafalgar bi-centenary celebrations, and Ships Monthly has arranged a Readers’ Tour to the Portsmouth area to give grandstand views of all the activities in the Solent. To avoid using expensive and very limited hotel accommodation in the area, we plan to precede and follow the review with mini-cruises to France travelling on three of the largest ferries operating from Portsmouth. We first set sail to St Malo with Brittany Ferries aboard Val de Loire, returning from Caen-Ouistreham with the impressive Mont St Michel. After watching Review activities from the closest possible on-shore vantage point, we drive back to the Ferryport to set sail again on Tuesday evening for Le Havre with P&O Ferries, returning on Wednesday morning to spend the afternoon in Southsea where events include a Drumhead service. The tour will be fully escorted throughout. |
Itinerary Sun 26 June
Coach pick-up from Portsmouth Harbour Station at 1730 or meet at Portsmouth Ferryport Terminal at 1830 (long stay parking available). We join Brittany Ferries evening sailing to St Malo (dep 2030) aboard the comfortable Val de Loire (1987/31,778gt) with dinner and overnight cabins on board.
Mon 27 June
Breakfast will be served before arrival in St Malo and we spend the day in Normandy, first visiting the always breathtaking Mont St Michel before continuing to Caen, capital of the Calvados Region. There will be a final short drive along the banks of the river Orne, and the ship canal, passing the site of Pegasus Bridge to arrive in Ouistreham for a Brittany Ferries crossing to Portsmouth aboard Mont St Michel (2002/35,592gt) with overnight cabins on board.
Tues 28 June
Breakfast will be available before Mont St Michel passes the assembled ships in Spithead and after arrival at Portsmouth, our Review Day programme clicks into gear. To ensure the closest view of all the Review events, we plan to head for Stokes Bay to watch the day‘s activities, driving back to Portsmouth Ferryport in the evening for a round trip with P&O Ferries aboard Pride of Portsmouth (1990/33,336gt). Departure is at 2245 and there will be excellent views of the floodlit review vessels as we head out to sea.
Wed 29 June
After early morning arrival in France, we remain on board and full breakfast will be enjoyed when the return sailing begins at 0800 (local time). There will be further grandstand views of the Review vessels we approach Portsmouth for a 1300 arrival. After disembarking, the tour coach will take us to the Southsea Sea Front for afternoon Review activities including the Drumhead service. The coach leaves at 1830 to drop off at Portsmouth and Southsea Station and the Ferry Port. |
