Entries are still flooding in for the sailpower.com-sponsored National
School Sailing Association Regatta which is taking place at Grafham
Water Sailing Club from 21-26 July. The NSSA regatta, for under
19-year-olds, always attracts a large entry from schools and clubs
around the country guaranteeing top class competition. With over
280 boats already registered, and with an extended deadline of 24
June, entries are expected to top the 300 mark making it the largest
event for several years.
This year's five-day, nine-race programme kicks off on Monday
22 July with the sailpower.com day. As well as the first two series
races, competitors will have the chance to benefit from a day's
tuition from Adam Bowers - the RYA Olympic 470 coach. Adam has,
for the second year running, teamed up with sailpower.com for this
event, to ensure competitors get the most from their first day on
the water.
Rigging, tuning and how to get the best starts will be included
in the training schedule followed by a de-brief later in the day.
There'll also be an Adam Bowers masterclass session in the evening
which is guaranteed to be great fun.
Racing continues until the Friday with the Mount Haes Trophy,
singlehander and all comers' races on the Wednesday. The Mount Haes
is a team event sailed for by the top performing sailors from each
school/club team. And this year for the first time, the race will
be sailed for in identical Dart 16s kindly loaned by the Laser Centre.
Racing for this event will be split in to two flights of six boats
with the top two boats from each flight going through to two semi-final
groups. The finalists will be the top three boats from the two semi-final
groups who will race boat-for-boat in a single-race final. For those
who fancy combining sailing with running and three-legged racing,
there's a chance to enter the Typhoon Challenge fun triathlon on
the same day with some great Typhoon prizes up for grabs.
As well as the racing, there's plenty of-off-the-water action
planned for the remainder of the week including a sports competition
on the Tuesday evening, a disco on Wednesday and a trip to the cinema
on Thursday evening. The prizegiving will take place at 1400 on
the Friday and there's even talk of an RAF Spitfire fly past.
