Because Helly-Hansen is one of the world's most respected sailing
clothing manufacturers we decided to put its latest drysuit through
the sailpower.com test and see if it lived up to expectations writes
Sue Pelling.
As a sailor who spends a fair amount of time getting wet at the
back end of a state-of-the-art National 12 racing dinghy, this drysuit
was really given a bashing and has, thanks to its superb quality,
survived the test without ill effect.
Hits: This 'no frills' one-piece suit is manufactured using lightweight,
hardwearing Helly Tech Extreme 3-ply breathable fabric with taped
seams to withstand a tough dinghy racing life. And the articulated
and reinforced knees and seat give extra protection without hampering
movement.
The proof of the pudding with a drysuit test, is however, is its
ability to keep the water out. Thankfully, this suit scored top
marks and I have to say, having spent more than my fair share of
time in the water 'learning to sail' my new boat last season, I
was impressed with the suit's performance and the ability to keep
me totally dry and warm. I also like the stylish cut and the elasticated
waist which gives a really good custom fit.
Misses: While I'm all for internal braces on a drysuit to ensure
the suit stays in place, I was disappointed that there were no snap
clips on the braces to aid easy access. In a hurry to get ready
for sailing, I consistenly managed to put my leg through the braces
loop while donning the suit only realising the mistake once I'd
put my feet in the ankle seals. Rather than being able to simply
unclip the braces and re-thread them the right side of my leg, I
had to take the entire suit off and start again.
Wish list: External pocket
Colour: Only one colour option available – main body red with
black trim. Value for money: The sort of price you'd expect to pay
for a good quality drysuit. Shop around and you could pick one up
at a slightly better price.
