Elaine Bunting talks to Bob Sims of Raymarine about how to ensure your electronic equipment works throughout the season. This podcast will tell you how to troubleshoot autopilots, chartplotters and other electronics, as well as letting you know how to get free software upgrades.
Chart plotters give a visual chart display, and when linked to a GPS will show your position. They can also be used to create waypoints (lat and long positions), and can be part of an integrated system that will show other data such as radar, fishfinders, instruments, AIS and Navtex.
RADAR stands for Radio Detection And Ranging and is mainly used as a ‘ship fi nder’ to avoid collisions in poor visibility. It can also be used for navigation, but with the advent of GPS has taken a back seat in this respect. It detects objects, determines their distance (range) and maps them on a screen. It consists of an antenna (scanner), that houses a transmitter/receiver and a display to give you a bird’s eye view of what’s around you.
Instrumentation falls into two main types: the stand-alone instruments that have one sensor that sends signals to a dedicated display, and the integrated system that has several sensors displaying their information on any screen that is compatible.

More and more yachtsmen are using PCs on board. A computer can be used as a tool for navigation, weather forecasting, communication or entertainment. First you need to decide on what hardware you need, how to install it, and the power and interfacing considerations.
From the invention of Autohelm® tiller pilot almost 30 years ago to SmartPilot™ gyro enhanced Advance Steering Technology today, Raymarine autopilots lead the way in autopilot technology and innovation and set a new benchmark in autopilot performance and reliability.
