Indian summer
Everybody says we've just had an Indian summer: which denotes a few days of sun at the end of a disappointing season.
I've always wondered what it means.
The web 'encyclopaedia' Wikipedia, has categories of origins which include Red Indian, ie cowboy irritants as well as runes from the Orient.
I am none the wiser, yet it is an evocative phrase which my parents used. And for reasons of nostalgia I hang on to it.
