BURNHAM-ON-CROUCH
May
1999 issue, No. 3 in our series.
When the Great Eastern branch railway was built, at the turn of
the century, boat owners migrated to Burnham from the busy, dirty
Thames and found the Crouch better for cruising and racing. So a
quiet oyster fishing village turned rapidly into a popular yachting
center, and has remained so to this day.
Deep water between the mud banks allows excellent round-the-cans
racing with competing yachts ranging from local one-designs and
keelboats to state-of-the-art offshore racers and four yachting
clubs welcome visiting sailors.
