Berenice
The ARC does not attract many classics, but the beautiful ketch
Berenice is one eye catching exception in this year’s
fleet. Built in 1923 by Samuel White in Cowes, this elegant lady
has led an eventful life, including a stint of coastal patrol work
during World War II with a cannon mounted on her foredeck!
She spent around 15 years doing charter work in the Caribbean, but
more recently was discovered lying in the River Dart in a sorry
state, having been converted into a houseboat. She was restored
in 2001 by Adventure Capital Ltd and is now available for use by
investors in the company (actually part owners of the boat) and
for charter.
She’s 80ft on deck, 95ft overall, and her pitch pine hull
displaces 85 tons. Down below she’s all about smoking jackets
and brandies. Beautiful gimballed silver candlesticks adorn the
mahogany-panelled bulkheads of the main saloon, and the heads are
fitted out with porcelain basins and brass taps. A bit like a Volvo
60 isn’t.
