Girls
for Sail
Girls For Sail is an RYA-recognised sailing school that was set
up with the idea of girls teaching girls how to sail in a relaxed,
testosterone-free environment. As well as running courses, they
enter many events on the UK and international calendar, always with
an all female crew. Although they did once host a stag party!
Skippering their Lavezzi 40 catamaran, chartered for the ARC, will
be 30-year-old Antonia Gripper, the principal of Girls For Sail
and one of its directors. She has been a skipper for the last six
years and also led Girls For Sail’s assault on the ARC last
year.
The multinational crew of eight varies in age from 28 to 63 and
comes from a variety of backgrounds. Asa Mann, from Sweden, owns
a boat with her husband, Anna Marie van Berkel is a doctor from
Holland, and first mate Leslie Squires just decided it was time
for a complete lifestyle change after doing the ARC last year.
Most of the crew had never met before arriving in Las Palmas for
the ARC, but Antonia reports no mutinies brewing yet.
After arriving in St Lucia, Girls For Sail has a full Caribbean
season planned, including three boats participating in Antigua Race
Week, and one in Tobago.
