Spirit
The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers is not meant to be all about speed,
but let’s face it, get two boats together and you’ve
got the makings of a race. Besides, someone’s got to cross
the line first, and this year skipper Hamish Oliphant was determined
it would be his Volvo 60 Spirit.
Spirit was launched for the 2002 Volvo Ocean Race as Tyco
under the command of Kevin Shoebridge. She finished fourth overall
after an exciting event that included breaking her rudder in the
Southern Ocean on the second leg.
Spirit is owned by Pure Sailing( www.puresailing.co.uk)
who have been using her for race charter in the UK this summer in
races such as the Round the Island, Fastnet and RORC series. Her
winter programme includes the ARC, Heineken Regatta, BVI Spring
Regatta and Antigua Race Week. The ARC crew was a mixture of professionals
and paying crew.
Yachting World’s Mike Kopman has been reporting daily from
Spirit.
