Guy Hoare
Panulirus – Island Packet 380
Along with friend Tom England, Guy is sailing with Keith and Clare Williams, who own the boat and are both anesthetists working in the UK, taking a few months off work.
Guy is the author of numerous letters of complaint, which have made him a household name in customer service departments throughout Britain. He was born in Essex but educated in Yorkshire, at the same school as the creator of Captain Pugwash. This fostered in him a deep love of all things nautical which persists to this day: in 1996 he rowed a tub pair from Oxford to Henley (and back) and over the last 15 years he has spent many weeks sunbathing on yachts in the eastern Mediterranean.
In preparation for this latest challenge he re-read ‘Wonk Goes To Sea and watched ‘The Perfect Storm’, ‘Master & Commander’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. Other than this he has had no formal training or certificates of competence and is without doubt the least qualified mariner on board Panulirus, if not in the whole of the ARC.
This is in fact his fifth time across the Atlantic, albeit the first time at sea level. Panulirus may be slower, but has more legroom and better food than the average jumbo. Needless to say, when the skipper got in touch looking for seamen, he dutifully rose to the challenge.
His autobiography, ‘Pass me a cannonball: In search of Davy Jones' Locker’ will be in all good bookshops by Christmas.
Julian Sincock
Northern Child – Swan 51
As the owner/skipper of Northern Child Julian really knows his way across the Atlantic. This is his sixth crossing, taking charterers. Julian’s aim, as always, is to finish in a good time without motoring. He won the ARC overall last year.
Julian is a Captain Class 4 and a RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Instructor. After serving the British Army, he decided to dedicate himself to sailing. He first joined a sea school in Jersey after which he trained for four months at Warsash Nautical College and gained the Captain Class 4, Yachts, qualification.
In 2001, he decided to create his own charter business on board a Swan 51. Northern Child has since developed to a successful business specializing in racing, cruising and corporate charters in the UK, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.
Julian has completed over 180,000 miles at sea as Captain, including 13 transatlantics, 6 of which were ARCs, 6 TransARC and 1 RORC Transatlantic race. In addition he has sailed 6 Swan Cups, 4 Fastnets, 7 Antigua Sailing Week, many RORC/JOG races, 2 Cowes Weeks, 4 St Maarten Heineken Regatta, 3 BVIs Spring Regatta, etc... Julian is a passionate sailor and always takes lots of pride to teach our crew as much as possible and create a real teamspirit within his crew.
Caylie Jeffery
Steamy Windows – Sigma 38
Caylie together with her husband, David, are sailing back to Australia on their beloved yacht, Steamy Windows. They left the Hamble in April 2006, having lived in London for six years.
After the London underground terrorist attacks, they decided they needed to be really throwing themselves into life, so after six months of planning, refinancing and learning to sail, they bought Steamy and left their jobs (Caylie in Medical Sales, and David in Mechanical Engineering Project Management) to start the journey home.
Together, over the last six months, they have learned to sail in many different conditions in the Med, in order to prepare for the Atlantic and Pacific crossings. They are thrilled to be part of the ARC, and have loved every minute of the preparations and celebrations. |
