About Daniel Daniel received an invitation out of the blue to crew on K8 for the ARC 07 and World ARC 2008 that was simply too good an offer to refuse, despite many UK commitments including a wife, four children (aged 12 to 18), numerous animals (a horse, three dogs and three cats) and a hectic business that involves hosting over 250 weddings every year.
Eleven years ago, Daniel bought a lovely Georgian mansion in Richmond Park, West London, and has worked flat out ever since to restore it from a derelict shell ravaged by dry rot and decades of neglect to its former magnificent glory. The huge number of weddings, coupled with around 150 conferences and about 280,000 public visitors each year is a reasonable clue that it has all worked out well.
The fantastic yacht, great crew and the desire to learn to sail better persuaded Daniel to “cast off” and take the plunge. Despite some 10,000 miles and a YM Ocean ticket, Daniel reckons he still has plenty to learn especially as the other crew have over a century of sailing experience between them!
This is not Daniel's first transatlantic – in 2006, along with friend Stokey Woodall, he organised a new transatlantic rally following the traditional route of Portugal – Madeira – Cape Verde – Barbados.
About Kealoha 8 Daniel is onboard Kealoha 8 - the latest in a line of boats owned by the Holliday family who have over 50 years of sailing experience on dinghies, Swans and Moodys.
K8 is the Oyster 72 model, number 4. It combines the very best of Oyster design with the experience that has been built up over 50 years. This is David Hollidayís third Oyster having graduated from Oyster 55 to a 68 and now the new 72. It is a remarkably luxurious yacht with full air conditioning, watermaker, a complete media suite, sound systems and flatscreen TVs throughout.
Despite all this luxury, in the right hands K8 sails powerfully and was eighth over the line in ARC 2006. Onboard is a crew of nine with remarkably similar ambitions - to get everyone there in one piece, thoroughly enjoy the passage and hopefully achieve a result of which they can be proud.
