America's Cup - back on an even keel
I was watching the racing from on shore today, or rather from the media centre where a bank of screens show live, close-up television and the virtual race as well.
As yesterday Dean Barker pulled of a great start and also as yesterday after a few minutes Alinghi reeled them in and led by a good margin by the first mark. When they reached the second mark with a slightly reduced lead several of the journos returned to their laptops to start filing their stories on another Alinghi win and bemoaning the future of the Cup.
Then something wonderful happened. As the breeze dropped and aided by a good shift the Kiwis gained an incredible 28 seconds to hold a 15 second lead at the third mark. At this point said journos left the room 'time to re-write that story'.
Well you know the rest of the story which must go down in history as one of the most exciting Cup matches ever. Emirates Team New Zealand won by 28 seconds, bringing life back to the 32nd America's Cup - and who knows, the future of the Cup as well.
Tomorrow is a lay day so we must wait till Tuesday to see what happens next.
