Two men airlifted to safety after their fishing boat caught fire

Two men were airlifted to safety after their fishing boat caught fire 16 miles north east of Filey Bay. Whilst waiting for help from the RNLI the men managed to take sanctuary in a life craft they had on board.

Lifeboat Coxswain, Barry Robson said: ‘When we arrived on scene it was clear that the vessel was well alight. It was also very obvious that the boat would burn out and probably finally sink. At this time all we could do was standby and wait until the vessel no longer became a hazard to shipping’.

After a large blaze the ship did unfortunately go down. The life craft was salvaged and the crew headed back once they had checked that there were no hazards left that could cause danger to other vessels.

No injuries have been reported as of yet.
