Derry has unveiled its entry for the Clipper 2011-2012 round-the-world yacht sailing race.
 
In an event sure to boost interest in the burgeoning “learn-to-sail holidays” market, the 68ft vessel named Derry-Londonderry took pride of place at Derry City Council’s Foyle Days maritime festival.
 
Established by pioneering round-the-world sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the event aims to give everyone, regardless of sailing experience, the chance to take part in ocean racing. More than 500 people are set to compete, and with interest in corporate sailing days booming, it could be a day to remember for watersports enthusiasts.
 
The fleet of 10 yachts taking part will leave the south coast of England on July 31, after which they will make their final berth in Derry 12 months later, while the Volvo Ocean race finishes in Galway in July 2012.
 
Derry-Londonderry crewmember Roy Devine – who has only just finished his coastal skipper theory training – joins the vessel for its final 4,000-mile leg. Mr Devine, a former finance director of Coolkeeragh power station in Derry, holds several directorships.
