Mary Rose and Cutty Sark receive a boost

Visitors to Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard can look forward to a new attraction after a £21m lottery grant was awarded to the Mary Rose Trust. The money will pay for a new boat-shaped museum to house the remains of the 500 year old vessel and the thousands of artefacts that have been recovered from the Solent seabed.

Scheduled to open in 2011, the ship’s new home will enable visitors to see the remaining timbers alongside a reconstruction of the missing half of the vessel.

A further £10m was granted to the restoration of the Cutty Sark, after the fire which gutted the 19th-century ship last year.
