Father of 13 became the first Hurricane Irene fatality in New York after checking on his boat

Jose Sierra, a father of 13 living in New York, died after braving the
raging storm to check on his boat at a City Island marina.

His body was spotted at a different marina, floating between two boats, almost eight hours
after he was seen going to check on his vessel.

The marina owner made the discovery when checking for damage after the worst of the hurricane had passed.

According to Eric Irizarry, whose daughter married Mr
Sierra’s son, he ignored his wife’s pleas to stay indoors.

Mr Irizarry told the New York Daily News: “His wife told him
not to leave, but he went anyway. He must have sneaked out. It’s a tragedy.”
