A canal floodgate in Germany was severely damaged after a 131m freighter crashed into it on Friday

A cargo ship caused major damage to a canal floodgate in Germany on Friday after crashing straight into it.

The 131m Cypriot-flagged freighter had been travelling through Kiel Canal when it collided with the gate as it entered the north chamber of the lock system in Brunsbüttel.

A loud bang can be heard in the video as the bow of the vessel pierces the gate, bringing the ship to a grinding hault.

It’s believed that it could take several weeks for the damage to be repaired, with the floodgate having been completely taken out of action following the incident.

It’s not yet known why the collision happened but initial reports suggest there was a technical fault with the ship.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
