Historic yacht club closes after concerns it may be sinking
The Alexandra Yacht Club has closed its clubhouse amid fears that it may be sinking
A 140-year-old yacht club in Southend has closed its doors after fears that it may be sinking.
The Alexandra Yacht Club in Cliff Gardens has temporarily shut due to safety concerns following a structural report.
Yacht club commodore Andy Solkhon told the Echo that the report had found the clubhouse “might be sliding”.
“At the moment, surveyors are looking into it, but for safety reasons we had to close the clubhouse temporarily.”
The yacht club currently lease the building from Southend Council and a structural report was ordered as the lease is up for renewal.
The council is now investigating to determine whether the cliff top clubhouse needs underpinning before deciding the fate of the building.
Members are still able to use the jetty and boat store but the club’s annual dinner had to be relocated as a result of the structural problems.
A meeting has been called this evening to update members on what structural work needs to take place, contact secretary@alexyachtclub.co.uk for more information.
