Major search operation launched Sunday night after boater was four hours late

The RNLI was launched late last night to help search for a missing person in a small outboard propelled dinghy.

They were joined by Oban Coastguard Coast Rescue Company, the Stornoway Coastguard helicopter and police offices. The search, which was hampered by rain and drizzle rendering their searchlights ineffective, lasted for around five hours.

At around 1.15 am the RNLI found the casualty on the dinghy near Degnish point, Oban. The boat had run out of fuel, leaving the sole crew member stranded.

The Lonesome Dove left Toberonachy on the island of Luing and was headed for Torsa via Loch Melfort.

The man onboard was examined by crew member Dr Colin Wilson and was deemed to be cold but okay. The boat was towed back to Luing ferry slipway.
