Distress flares spotted two miles off Beachy Head near Eastbourne

An angler was rescued from a burning boat after several vessels
spotted distress flares two miles off shore and contacted Dover Coastguard.

The 27ft motor cruiser Knowwanda
caught fire two miles south of Beachy Head earlier this week.

Both Emsworth lifeboats were launched whilst Pelorus, which was the first boat at the
scene, rescued the angler from the flaming boat.

The RNLI towed the blazing boat to the beach east of Eastbourne pier where the
flames were put out by the Fire and Rescue service. The cruiser was beyond repair and abandoned on the beach.

The owner was taken to hospital for a precautionary
examination for possible smoke inhalation.
