Triple Olympic gold medalist will start the relay from Land’s End

Triple Olympic gold medalist Ben Ainslie will kick off the Olympic torch relay today when the flame reaches the UK.

Ainslie, who is Britain’s most successful sailor, is the first of 8,000 torchbearers to carry the Olympic flame for a mile on its journey across the country.

“I am extremely honoured to be the first torch bearer,” Ainslie said. “It will be an amazing experience to be able to carry the Olympic flame in the area that I grew up in.”

It’s an exciting few days for Ainslie, who won his sixth Finn World Championship yesterday in Falmouth.

With three Olympic gold medals under his belt, Ainslie is set to become the most successful sailor ever if he wins again in Weymouth and Portland.
