Plymouth University student becomes first Brit to win yacht design contest

Daniel Humphreys has won an international award for his design of a dismountable boat with eco-friendly propulsion. It makes him the first British student to win the internationally recognised Abitare La Barca Concept Award.

The third-year industrial design student won the chance to compete at the event in Carrara, Italy, after winning this year’s Superyacht UK competition at the Tullet Prebon London Boat Show.

Humphreys competed against 11 Italian design students in the freehand drawing competition to design a completely dismountable boat of 10-12ft with eco-friendly propulsion and made with natural or recyclable materials used throughout.

“Daniel’s design was an excellent match among the constraints, with significant original solutions and attention to detail to aesthetical values. It is rich in design details and excellent drawing execution,” said Marco Maiocchi, award president and professor of industrial design.
