A tourist ferry in Finland hit the shore at the weekend when the captain became trapped in the ship's loo

A ferry off the shore of Helsinki ran aground when the captain got stuck in the toilet because of a jammed lock.

With the captain locked in the loo, another member of staff managed to slow the boat down.

Authorities say the captain was calling for help but couldn’t get out in time.

“He was stuck in the toilet,” said Jan Sundell, head of the investigation. “As soon as the staff member got the door open, it was too late.”

They couldn’t prevent a crash and the ferry hit rocks off the coast of the Finnish capital. No one suffered any serious injuries in the incident.

Coastguards are investigating whether the captain’s actions amount to criminal endangerment.
