The weekend of the 17th & 18th March saw 14 Sunsail F40’s take to waters of the
Solent for Round 1 of the 2012 Gill sponsored Sunsail Racing Series.

Saturday morning dawned to some miserable weather, lots of rain and not a great deal of
wind. By the time the teams had ventured out of Portsmouth Harbour and to the
start line, the rain had cleared a SSW F3-4 had set in.

After an hour and half’s close racing, it was the team lead by Pete Walters that took
the gun ahead of Imogen Whittam and Damien Farine.

By race two, the wind for race two dropped down to 8-9kts, although as the
afternoon went on, the wind started to back further to the SW and picked back
up again to around 15kts. Again, playing the tides Pete Walters took the lead,
which he held to the finish, again followed by Imogen Whittam, with 3rd going
Henry Archer.

Sunday dawned to some overcast skies, with the wind from the SW but only blowing 7-8kts.

For race 3, this caused some place changing throughout the race, allowing Henry
Archer to put some of his winter practise into effect and take 1st, followed by
Pete Walters and Damien Farine.

With the final race being cancelled due to the lack of wind, all three races were to
count, with Pete Walters taking 1st, Henry Archer, 2nd and Damien Farine 3rd.

This weekend, 31st March & 1st April, sees Round 2 of the Series taking place,
with 15 boats racing, including some university teams warming up for next weeks
BUSA Nationals.
