Mumm signs up as sponsor of Ladies Day at Cowes
And you can nominate the lead lady of the day
Champagne G.H. Mumm is the proud sponsor of this year’s Ladies Day @ Skandia Cowes Week which is earmarked for Thursday, 9th August. As one of the regatta’s long-standing supporting sponsors, and with its own commitment to celebrating remarkable feats of endurance and human achievement, this is a perfect fit and there’s a host of fun and celebratory activities planned.
Lucy Cousens, senior brand manager at G.H. Mumm is delighted, commenting: “Champagne G.H. Mumm has been involved with Skandia Cowes Week for many decades now, so it is only fitting that we’ve gone one step further by supporting Ladies Day. We love the glamour that it represents and more than anything enjoy playing a part in celebrating the fantastic achievements of the crews.”
Ladies Day @ Skandia Cowes Week recognises and celebrates the contribution and achievements of women in sailing. The Event organisers, Cowes Combined Clubs (CCC), are keen that it should encompass all female sailors, ranging from Corinthians and those overcoming physical and/or mental difficulties in order to sail, to those who have undertaken remarkable challenges and achieved extraordinary results. It is a fact that more women than ever now compete at the Event and at least a third of the 8,500 competitors are female.
In order to highlight the increasing involvement of the fairer sex and to celebrate sailing as one of few mainstream sports where women compete with men on equal terms, CCC will award their Ladies Day Trophy at the Champagne G.H. Mumm Ladies Day Reception and Award ceremony to be held on the Thursday evening. Last year’s inaugural Ladies Day Trophy was awarded to Betty Moore who, at 88 years young, was its first recipient. Betty was recognised for having sailed at Cowes Week every year since 1947; demonstration indeed of a remarkable woman making a remarkable contribution.
Who could win the Trophy in 2007? It is about nominations, not votes! Visit www.skandiacowesweek.co.uk for more details.
It is up to the public to get their nominations in by midday on Friday, 3rd August. The process is simple, and anyone can nominate a female competitor at Skandia Cowes Week, past or present; indeed female competitors may even nominate themselves, or put someone else forward for nomination for their outstanding contribution; commitment; or achievement in sailing in general terms (not just at Skandia Cowes Week). The nominated individual needs to have competed at the Regatta in recent years, and must be available to attend Thursday’s early evening Champagne G.H. Mumm Ladies Day Reception.
All nominations will be reviewed by an Event panel that will include Olympic double Gold medallist Shirley Robertson OBE. The panel will short-list five nominees, all of whom will be invited to join the exclusive Champagne G.H. Mumm Ladies Day Reception and Award ceremony being held this year at the prestigious Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. The winner will be announced and the Trophy will be presented by none other than Dame Ellen MacArthur in front of an invited audience, including the media.
