Silence is golden
The Royal London Yacht Club in Cowes has traditionally sounded the start of racing with a canon, perhaps expected by yachtsman, the blast would often startle passers-by – for this reason the RLYC has employed the use of deflectors to send the sound high, and out to sea

Halyard, manufacturers of sound insulation that is typically found lining the inside of engine compartments and exhaust silencers that are commonly used on many production boats, was called upon to design and fit a system whereby the sound of the cannons would not be muted, but simply deflected from the street below and directed out to sea. Testing to the rifle-silencer like design proved successful, reducing noise to 137dB on the street below, a reduction of some 75 percent.
