Teenager killed by boat propeller
Fell overboard with friend off the Needles
A 14-year-old boy has died after falling overboard during a boating trip with two friends off the coast of the Isle of Wight.
It’s believed that a propeller killed Charlie Hutton when he and a friend fell overboard the RIB on Friday 20 July, which was driven and owned by his dad. Simon Hutton and another of Charlie’s friends managed to stay on board the vessel.
Charlie was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by coastguard helicopter but he could not be saved. His friend suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Charlie’s parents said in a statement: “We are very sad to announce the death of our beautiful and very talented boy.”
“Two of his closest friends were with him when he died and I hope they remember the great times and laughs we had with Charlie in his final few days in Dorset.”
Police are investigating how the accident happened but say there are no suspicious circumstances.
