Broken down boat narrowly avoided being sucked under the ferry

A woman narrowly avoided being sucked under a ferry when her boat broke down in Poole.

She was left clinging to the side of the Sandbanks chain ferry when the 18ft boat became trapped.

The woman had a lucky escape when the RNLI, who happened to be passing, spotted the boat and rescued her.

The boat “could easily have been sucked under the ferry,” the RNLI said, because the conditions were rough and choppy with strong gusting easterly winds.

The accident happened after the boat’s engine failed and she drifted straight into the path of the ferry returning to the harbour.

“It’s very hazardous if you do go anywhere near the ferry,” said an eyewitness. “People don’t realise the tide strength.”
