A look at the illegal fishing industry that's worth £17.7 million and devastating the coastal communities of West Africa
Every year illegal fishing is costing Sierra Leone an estimated £17.7 million and wasting thousands of tonnes of fish.
The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) operates a
surveillance vessel that responds to callouts from local communities when
pirate fishermen are spotted in the area.
Their role is to gather information and evidence that helps
to build a case against the pirates. Whenever possible, the criminals are
prosecuted under national and international law.
To date over 70 vessels from 16 countries suspected of
fishing illegally have been identified.
